Maria W. Stewart’s
upbringing of education and religion allowed her to have a very interesting
understanding about inalienable rights that was ahead of her time, especially
for women to have. Her accessibility to
books, and tendency for independent thought was remarkable as it allowed for
her the capacity to fight for civil rights.
In her lecture she stated that just as white people regardless of their
gender did not want to be laborers, and how could they even fathom a life of
servitude. This comparison among many
others along with her opinion of slavery as a horror and she even claimed her
knowledge and understanding of religion to be useful in backing up her
claims. When conveying her opinions
Maria W. Stewart had to put a lot of emphasis on her style, and her ability to
connect with her audience, especially because of her gender, and especially
because of the group of people that she was advocating for.
On the other side,
Fredrick Douglass’ understanding of his African American society, hardships and
discrimination, along with his past in slavery very influential in his writings
about slavery and the like. This ethos
is successful for Douglass for his argument to provide an understanding of the
treatment of slaves. His emphasis of freedom
and basic principles were revolutionary not only because of their content, but
also because of the methods by which those ideas were relayed as well as who
they were coming from. The details of
what travesties occurred to slaves was stylistically portrayed in a very
shocking and real way.
How are style and delivery more challenging in writing than in speech? In speech there are so many things that you have to think about in the moment, including your body language and dress, and everything else that plays into it. When you’re wiritng there is less to keep track of. In an academic setting often times speech is not held to a smiliar high standard that writing is. When you perform a speech the most important aspect is that you complete the assignment properly and in full. It does not always matter how your delivery is, because the standard that you are held to is not very high, when it writing the standard is higher. The writer has the pressure and the stressors of what conventions are demanded through writing. People seem to stress so much over papers and being able to fill up the full content of the pages, but in speech if someone is told to speak in the moment usually they can come up with something to say, whether or not it is exactly what the kairos was demanding. When we think about tone and voice in speech and writing the kind of relationship that you establish with your audience is useful. We don’t have to get caught up in an either or in regards to speech and writing and when you take into consideration multimodal texts and how those two function together and in conjunction with other visual elements, images, graphics, etc., then the challenges can be greater because you have to make more choices, but also easier because when one falls short in one area, then another can compensate for that space or weaknesses that need to be filled.
